DOES GOD'S SPIRIT LIVE IN YOU?
by Pastor Seth Asare Ofei Badu
But if the Spirit of
Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the
dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in
you. Ro 8:11 (NKJV)
Before Jesus came, it was not possible for God’s Spirit to
dwell (live) in a human being. This is because of man’s sinful nature. God’s
Spirit could however come upon some people He chose, giving them ability to do
some extraordinary things such as prophesying and raising the dead. Through
Joel, one the people who could prophesy in those days, God promised that He
would pour out His Spirit on all flesh (people) in some time to come.
The time that was promised through Joel came when Jesus
came, died for all people, arose from the dead and ascended to Heaven. Before
Jesus ascended, He promised the disciples that the Holy Spirit will come and
live (dwell) in them. When Jesus’ disciples were waiting for the promise Jesus gave
them, the Holy Spirit came upon all of them (as they put it), and they spoke in
tongues and prophesied. Peter, the leader of the disciples said on that day
that what had happened was the fulfilment of Joel’s prophecy. He said that the
Gift of the Holy Spirit was for everyone in every generation who would repent
and be baptised in the name of Jesus.
In his letter to the church at Rome, Apostle Paul, who had
also received the Holy Spirit by repenting and being baptised in Jesus’ name, threw
more light on who the Holy Spirit is and what He does. He said the Holy Spirit
is the Spirit of God who raised Christ form the dead. He is therefore able to
give life to those in whom He comes to live: The Holy Spirit gives life not
just because He is able to raise those who die back to life, but because He is
able to make our present bodies which are under the sentence of death capable
of doing things we could not do before we received Christ.
Have you received the Gift of the Spirit of Him who raised
Christ from the dead? If not, now is the time to receive Him. Jesus gave His
life on the cross to make it possible for God to forgive your sins and wipe
your guilt away completely when you repent. By this you are purified and made a
temple for God’s Spirit to live (dwell) in, giving you the ability to live a
holy life and for God to work through you to save others.
